What is Tetris?
Tetris is an ever-famous puzzle video game! It has intrigued players around the world since its inception in 1984. The simple yet addictive gameplay includes arranging falling geometric shapes or tetrominoes to form horizontal lines. Cleared lines give points to the player who claims to delay blocks from stacking onto the screen. Tetris indeed has become something of a cultural phenomenon, crossing the barriers between generations and platforms to stay revered as one of the all-time gaming classics.
How to Play
The gameplay of Tetris is much intuitive to perform but hard to master. The player uses the D-Pad to move the falling tetrominoes either left or right, presses the "A" button for rotation of the tetromino, and then presses the "B" button to drop them as quickly as possible. Try to lay pieces in such a way that they fill the horizontal line with no gaps. When a complete line is formed, the line will be removed and the player will earn points. The game ends when the pieces stack to the uppermost level of the playing field. Higher points mean winners!
Tips & Tricks
- Plan Ahead: Always watch out for the next falling tetromino. You can work out where to put the one in play by anticipating its shape.
- Clear Multiple Lines: Always aim for line clears in multiples to increase your scores. Clearing four lines in one go--a Tetris--should be your primary goal.
- Don't Get Stuck: In case you are in a tight spot and find yourself panicking, try to quickly drop the pieces to create some space (use the B button).
- Stay Organized: Try keeping the bottom of the playing field clear so you have a larger working area.
History / Origins
Tetris was created by Alexey Pajitnov, following which it gained rapid popularity in the USSR and later saw its international release. Darwin's first Tetris was launched in 1984 in Moscow, and it drew the attention of many within the Soviet Union. The issue over the game's publishing rights arose late in the 1980s and was finally resolved when Nintendo got hold of the rights. Consequently, in 1996, the rights were reverted to Pajitnov himself, who established The Tetris Company along with Henk Rogers for licensing and safeguarding the genuine spirit of Tetris.
