What Is Arkanoid (US, Older)?

Arkanoid (US, older), or simply Arkanoid or Breakout, is a classic arcade puzzle game developed by Taito and released in 1976. It stands as one of the first brick-breaking video games where the player controls a paddle to bounce the ball off different bricks, clearing levels while dodging obstacles and ambidextrous power-ups. The simple yet addictive gameplay combined with brilliant visuals and catchy tunes made the game a huge hit and a precursor to many puzzle games of today.

Gameplay

The paddle moves horizontally by controlling it with the left and right arrow keys or with a joystick. The ball bounces off the paddle, and the objective is to destroy all bricks on the screen. Losing a life will follow if the ball passes below the paddle. Bricks may require several hits, some levels have very special elements such as moving bricks or disappearing platforms, almost as if the game is telling you to collect power-ups for a larger paddle, multi-balls, or extended time to help rush through a level.

Tips & Tricks

Keep the Paddle Centered: Try to keep the paddle in the center of the screen so you have more room to move around when the ball bounces unpredictably.
Keep Track of the Ball: Observe how the ball bounces off the paddle and bricks to predict its next move.
Strategic Power-Up Collection: Pick power-ups carefully. Bigger paddles, for example, might be harder to control on the first go.
Patience: You may find some levels hard; don't feel discouraged if you miss many times. Just give yourself a break, and return to the game with a fresh mindset.

History

Arkanoid introduced many of the features that would postulate as staples in the puzzle psyche at an advanced stage in time.
