What is Arkanoid (Japan, older rev.)?

Arkanoid, often termed Tetris in Space for its block-breaking antics, is a classic arcade game that first entered Japan right around the early '80s. The older revision maintains the title's famous gameplay mechanics—a ball bounced off a paddle to break blocks while avoiding obstacles and power-ups. Luckily for retro gamers, this game is the perfect mix of precision, strategy, and a bit of luck. Every one of them says it should never fade away.

How to Play

The controls are rather simple but can convince you that the game is much harder than thought: left and right with mouse or joystick to move the paddle to make sure the ball does not fall off from the bottom of the screen. Destroy all blocks that could stand in the way of completing a level. Beware also; some blocks send the ball on loyal departure angles, whereas some take many hits! The harder it gets with each level, so keep those reflexes sharp!

Tips & Tricks

Stay Centered: Paddle should be in the middle of the screen to grant ample space to move.
Watch the Ball: Try to anticipate where the ball will land, and then move just in time to keep it bouncing.
Use Power-ups Wisely: Some blocks release power-ups for huge paddle, multi-ball, or extra time-based game—make sure you use those wisely!
Patience is Key: Should you die, don't lose hope! Every attempt really helps in teaching you about the levels' patterns.

History

Arkanoid was developed by Taito in 1986 as an arcade game. Soon it became one of the sensation games throughout the years that spawn a maze of clones and follow-ups. The game's somewhat unusual puzzle-action gameplay system established itself as a globetrotting arcade staple, while we still see its farther influence in modern block-breaker games today.
