What is Pac-Man?
Pac-Man is a very old arcade game by Namco dating back to 1980, starring a yellow disc-like figure named Pac-Man, who goes about a maze to eat dots and escape ghosts. Its easy, addictive gameplay mixed with its outlandish graphics and catchy sound effects established it as a cultural phenomenon and one of the most memorable videogames ever. For its age, Pac-Man still is a favorite that enthralls generation after generation.
How to Play
Now that Pac-Man is under your control, use arrow keys on your keyboard to help Pac-Man complete his task. Your goal is simple: eat all the dots in the maze while avoiding the four ghosts: Blinky (red), Pinky (pink), Inky (cyan), and Clyde (orange). Each also has its style of movement. Wander too close to one and you will lose a life. In the spirit of making things interesting, power pellets appear from time to time, offering an option for consumers to eat the ghosts instead for a short period! The game ends either if you eat all dots or lose all your lives.
Tips & Tricks
- Know the Ghost Patterns: Each ghost has a predictable pattern of movements. Blinky always targets Pac-Man; Pinky tries to cut him off; Inky targets Blinky; and Clyde tends to throw the chase when he is near.
- Don't wait too long to eat power pellets: The longer you leave them on the screen, the more time the ghosts have to regroup.
- Watch Your Step: Always think ahead and plan a path to get around being boxed in by the ghosts.
- Use the Corners to Your Advantage: Corners of the maze can be turned into an escape channel or a regrouping point.
History
Pac-Man was created by a group at Namco led by Toru Iwatani. The game was based on a Japanese board game called "Tic-Tac-Toe", where the idea was a character eating dots. The game's explosive success was unprecedented, breaking sales after sales records and becoming the hallmark of 1980s video games. It permeated beyond gaming, into pop culture, merchandise, and even film and television.
