What Is Galaxian?

Galaxian is an arcade shooter, developed by Irem and launched in 1979. This space-themed program punishes players with challenging gameplay of alien invaders trying to invade Earth. The bright colors, catchy tunes, and gameplay provided Galaxian with instant fame and is still considered to be one of the much-sought-after retro games. Unique to the game are some mechanics such as the shooting-down of alien ships with various patterns, which make it interesting in the early days of arcade shooters.

How to Play

The players are controlling their ships at the bottom of the screen and shooting from waves of alien ships approaching from the top in Galaxian. These aliens are of varying types. They behave and move differently according to their type. Power-ups are also available and useful to fortify one's attack or provide a small time of invincibility. The game ends after all alien ships are destroyed or an alien ship deals a blow to the player's own ship.
